The Nortons make their move to Martlesham with Help to Buy

The Government’s Help to Buy scheme made it possible for David and Julie Norton to make the move to the home of their dreams in Martlesham.

David, 47, and 46-year-old Julie used the scheme to buy a three-bedroom townhouse at Bloor Homes’ Mill Heath development with just a five per cent deposit and 75 per cent mortgage.

The remaining 20 per cent is provided as an equity loan interest free for the first five years.

The family – David, Julie, their children Alex, 25, and Shannon, 20, and rescue dog Barney – were initially looking to swap their townhouse in Ipswich for a period property.

But they changed their minds after they paid a visit to Mill Heath.

David, a shift manager for an electricity distribution company in Ipswich, said: “We were living about four miles from the town centre and we decided it was time for change of scenery. We wanted somewhere with more of a sense of community.

“Originally the idea was to go for a period property, but when we saw Mill Heath we fell in love with it and decided it would be the best move for us.”

Julie, 46, who works in catering, said: “What we liked about the development was that it wasn’t too big, and it was in a lovely village with a really nice atmosphere. The rooms in our home are just the right size and the finishing touches are fantastic.”

David added: “The kitchen was a big-selling point for us as it’s more than big enough for us to eat in together as a family.

“The property was everything we were looking for and Help to Buy helped us to make it an affordable move.

“When we looked at all the figures we decided that to have a slightly smaller mortgage to start with made financial sense. It definitely helped us to buy the property we had fallen in love with.”

The family have enjoyed becoming part of the Martlesham community since moving in at Mill Heath.

David said: “We’re in a lovely area and we have fantastic neighbours. Everyone we meet is friendly and there’s a great sense of community in the village.

“Everything went just as we had hoped with the move and the whole process was a smooth one.  The sales advisors were always on the end of the phone whenever we had any questions and Bloor’s recommended solicitors and mortgage brokers were perfect.”
